Rudi Gernreich

Circa 1970 iconic Rudi Gernreich 2-piece outfit consisting of black and gray tweed unitard with contrasting black and gray geometric mini skirt. A signature concept by Gernreich, developed to mix and match his geometric pattern knits and which can be worn in different ways.

Features a rare cropped pant unitard (constructed by sewing 2 pieces together, with inset sleeves). His unitard designs created to give freedom and comfort to the body were inspired by his background in dance. Contrasting pull-on mini skirt with attached panties. Large belt loops on the mini skirt match the fabric of the unitard. Pieces were sold as coordinating separates and most often were paired together and finished with a wide belt at hips. As seen on in the "The Rudi Gernrich Book" by Moffett and Claxon on page 179 (Grey wool plaid unitard and skirt). The coordinating of sportswear separates and low rise style has been continuously adapted over the years and is very much a part of fashion today.

Condition: excellent. Original belt is missing and has been replaced with one in the style of the period. Black and white opaque tights shown with outfit (are not original Gernreich but were worn with outfit).
